Course summary
Designed for complete beginners, this course introduces the essential Spanish language and communication skills you need for everyday and work situations.
You will develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing while building a practical foundation in Spanish grammar and vocabulary. You will also gain an introduction to the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.
The typical exit level is CEFR A1.2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Who is this course for?
This course is for complete beginners with no previous knowledge of Spanish.
Course structure
Teaching
This course uses a communicative approach, with Spanish used as much as possible. Interactive classes include role-play, pair work and group activities to help you build confidence in practical situations.
Grammar and vocabulary are introduced in context and practised through everyday social and professional scenarios. You will also develop transferable skills including communication, teamwork, self-management and reflection.
Alongside weekly classes, you will undertake regular independent study. Online activities and other learning materials are provided through Blackboard, the University's Virtual Learning Environment, to help you review and extend your learning.
Semester/ part breakdown
The course is taught over two semesters. You must complete semester 1 before progressing to semester 2.
Semester 1: 21 September to 11 December 2026
Semester 2: 18 January to 9 April 2027
You will attend one two-hour workshop each week. There is a one-week teaching break in week 6 of each semester.
Indicative topics include:
- introducing yourself in formal and informal settings
- exchanging personal information
- making invitations and requests, accepting, refusing and apologising
- describing family, friends and colleagues
- expressing likes and dislikes
- asking for and giving directions
- making travel arrangements
- ordering food and drink
- shopping and asking about prices
- describing your home, neighbourhood and town
- discussing daily routines and leisure activities
There is no summative assessment for short course participants.
Workshop: Thursdays, 5pm to 7pm.
