Course summary
Designed for learners with upper-intermediate Arabic, this course will help you communicate with greater fluency, accuracy and confidence in a wide range of social, academic and professional situations.
You will expand your grammar and vocabulary while exploring contemporary cultural, social and political issues in Arabic-speaking countries and communities.
The typical exit level is CEFR B1.2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Who is this class for?
This course is the natural progression from Arabic Grade 4 or an equivalent course. It is for learners with a solid intermediate level of Arabic who want to develop greater fluency, accuracy and confidence.
Course structure
Teaching
This course uses a communicative approach, with Arabic used as much as possible. Interactive classes include role-play, group discussions, presentations and collaborative tasks to help you communicate confidently in real-life situations.
Grammar and language structures are introduced in context and practised through social, academic and professional scenarios. You will also develop transferable skills including communication, critical thinking, teamwork, research, presentation, self-management and reflection.
Alongside weekly classes, you will undertake regular independent study. Online activities and other learning materials are provided through Blackboard, the University's Virtual Learning Environment. You will also work with authentic Arabic-language sources to develop your language skills, cultural awareness and research skills.

Semester/part breakdown
The course is taught over two semesters. You must complete semester 1 before progressing to semester 2.
Semester 1: 21 September to 11 December 2026
Semester 2: 18 January to 9 April 2027
You will attend one two-hour workshop each week. There is a one-week teaching break in week 6 of each semester.
Indicative topics include:
- work and employability in a global context
- current political, economic and social affairs
- political systems and legal issues
- freedom and democracy
- ethnic and religious minorities
- diversity and identity
- standard Arabic and dialects in contemporary culture
- Arabic culture through film, literature, music and fashion
There is no summative assessment for short course participants.

Most classes are held at our historic headquarters building at 309 Regent Street. This is a dedicated teaching building with purpose-designed facilities.
