The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has a dedicated placements team that works to bridge the gap between academia and industry, enabling students to apply their knowledge to a real work setting, across both public and private sectors. Many placements can be offered on a full or part-time basis.
We support a broad range of courses across our Humanities, Social Sciences, Life Sciences and Law schools.

Work Placements for Humanities
- Short-term undergraduate placements (a minimum of 35 hours) across a broad range of industries and organisations, offering suitably challenging work experience, taking place between September and December.
- Extended undergraduate placements across a wide range of fields, from education and translation to publishing, marketing, charity work, human resources, archives, museums and the cultural sector. Placements can be a semester or year long and a minimum of four days per week.
- Integrated postgraduate placements involve Professional Writing and Translation students taking a 550-hour work placement (minimum) over a 12–month period. Placements are often in copywriting, editing/publishing, journalism, magazine work and translation.
Placements in Archives, Museums and other cultural institutions
- Short-term undergraduate internships with a minimum of 72 hours of experience between September–April, closely aligned with cultural institutions and history.
- Offering a minimum of 105 of work experience between January–August, typically in curating, galleries, journalism, media, museums, publishing and cultural organisations.
- Integrated postgraduate placements with 550 hour (minimum) work placements in in museums, galleries and other cultural institutions, beginning in September.
Placements in Criminology and Sociology
- Short-term undergraduate internships offer a minimum 35-hour work experience between September–April.
- Year long placements typically across both public and private sectors including government, social research, charities, NGOs, corporate (including marketing, communications, PR and HR), criminal justice, community safety, youth justice and welfare organisations.
Placements in Psychology
- Yearlong placements for 35 weeks (minimum) in a work setting related to psychology. Students work for a minimum of four days per week.
- Short-term postgraduate placements between September and April, at a minimum of 30 hours.
Placements in Politics and International Relations
- Yearlong placements for 35 weeks (minimum), with students working for a minimum of four days per week in a role directly related to the area of study.
Placements in Life Sciences
- Sandwich placements, of 35–52 weeks for undergraduate life sciences students in their penultimate year of study. Placements usually commence in September and can be paid or unpaid.
- Short-term postgraduate placements, ranging from 30-84 hours and typically completed between January and April.
- Integrated postgraduate placements for a minimum of 500 hours over a year for MSc Integrative Health and Wellbeing students. Placements can be paid or unpaid, full or part-time and begin in September.
Work-based learning
- Second-year Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Politics, International Relations and Law students can undertake 35 hours of work experience as part of their undergraduate programme.
