Who is this class for?

Cantonese Beginner is the first exposure to the language, allowing you to start to communicate.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have no or little previous knowledge of Cantonese
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Cantonese for about 20 hours
  • You can join Part 3 if you have studied Cantonese for about 40 hours

Course structure

Our Cantonese lessons follow a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language you need to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.

Please note that the distribution of course content across terms may vary from year to year. This is due to the variable length of terms in different academic years. There may also be slight content variations at the discretion of the tutor. We may, for example, include additional content when general progress is good, or vary content according to students’ interests.

We will use Cantonese for Everyone throughout the course. However, please wait until the first session before buying your course book.

In this term, we will cover:

  • radicals of Chinese characters
  • Cantonese phonetic system
  • numbers up to 100 million
  • public amenities; description of functions
  • simple description of a town
  • useful expressions of greetings
  • leisure activities

Grammar

You will learn:

  • singular and plural personal pronouns and possessive pronouns
  • usage of various adjectives forms
  • closed questions forms
  • open-end questions forms
  • using adverbs (dak1)
  • measure words, 4 syllables vocabulary combination

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • describing people
  • rooms at home
  • facilities in a hotel
  • in a Hong Kong Style café
  • food and drinks

Grammar

You will learn:

  • comparison between written and spoken Chinese
  • usage of various conjunctions to form a valid sentence (tung4), (dou1)
  • grammar words used in different tenses (gan2) (zo2)
  • to express someone’s desire using (soeng2) (jiu3)

In this term, we will cover:

  • direction and position
  • travelling in Hong Kong
