Would you like to learn Croatian/Serbian in London? Join one of our part-time Croatian/Serbian courses at our central London Regent Street Campus – just a few minutes' walk from Oxford Circus.

Our beginners’ Croatian/Serbian courses (Grade 1) start in October. If you already have some knowledge of Croatian/Serbian you can also join part 2 or part 3 of the Beginners’ Croatian/Serbian (Grade 1) course.

We also have pre-intermediate Croatian/Serbian classes starting in October each year.

Who is this class for?

Croatian Beginners’ (Grade 1) is the first exposure to the language, allowing you to start to communicate.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have no or little previous knowledge of Croatian.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Croatian for about 20 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you have studied Croatian for about 40 hours.

Course content

Our Croatian/Serbian lessons follow a communicative approach to language teaching, focusing on the language you need to communicate in authentic situations with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Our evening classes are taught by experienced language teachers who are native speakers of the language or equivalent.

Part 1

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • personal introductions
  • the alphabet
  • simple expressions (greetings, 'how are you?')
  • countries and nationalities
  • professions and places of work
  • family

Grammar

You will learn:

  • nominative singular of nouns and adjectives
  • gender
  • personal pronouns
  • present tense of the verb 'to be'
  • possessive pronouns
  • present tense – three types of conjugations of all verbs
  • cardinal numbers
  • the locative, accusative and genitive singular

Part 2

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • days of the week, parts of the day and months
  • weather and seasons
  • telling the time
  • hobbies and sport
  • daily routine
  • travelling, modes of transport

Grammar

You will learn:

  • modal verbs
  • adverbs of frequency and time
  • nominative plural of nouns and adjectives
  • instrumental singular
  • reflexive verbs

Part 3

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • food and drink
  • shopping
  • directions: public places and ways of giving directions
  • likes and dislikes
  • invitations
  • postcards from holidays
  • description of past events

Grammar

You will learn:

  • possessive adjectives
  • ordinal numbers
  • imperative
  • past tense

There may be slight content variations at the discretion of the tutor. We may, for example, include additional content when general progress is good, or vary content according to students' interests.

Learning resources

The course is based on the tutor’s own materials. Students may also want to get a copy of Učimo hrvatski 1 or Reč po reč, which they can use as supplementary material. However, please wait until the first session before buying your course book.

Who is this class for?

This level of Croatian is post-beginner, allowing you to extend your range of basic skills.

  • Part 1 is for you if you have already studied the Croatian language for approximately one year or 60 hours.
  • You can join Part 2 if you have studied Croatian for about 80 hours.
  • You can join Part 3 if you have studied Croatian for about 100 hours.

  • places, travelling and holidays
  • leisure and hobbies

Grammar

You will learn:

  • some of the dative case and verbs it takes (dati, pomoći, obećati, reći,...)
  • descriptive adjectives
  • comparison of adjectives
  • nouns, adjectives and personal pronouns in the accusative case
  • nouns, adjectives and personal pronouns in the genitive case

Part 2

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • shopping for clothes (sizes, colours, patterns)
  • transport (living in a big city)
  • different lifestyles (good and bad habits)
  • human body, health and health issues
  • sports and healthy life
  • plans for future – ideals, dreams, expectations

Grammar

You will learn:

  • the future tense
  • word order (enclitics)
  • the instrumental case (with the meaning of time and place)
  • verbal nouns (plivanje, skijanje, trčanje...)
  • the present participle (present gerund)

Part 3

Topics

In this term, we will cover:

  • There is no Account for Taste – different cuisines and traditional Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin food
  • career and work
  • stress (its causes and how to reduce stress)
  • travelling
  • meeting new people

Grammar

You will learn:

  • the conditional (real, potential, unreal)
  • the pronoun one's own (svoj, -a, -e)
  • the reflexive pronoun (sebe, se)
  • revision of adjectives and adverbs
  • expansion of verbal aspect (perfective, imperfective)
  • adjectives ending in -ski, -ški and -čki
  • points of compass and adjectives ending in -ni
