DBS checks

If your host organisations (e.g. a school) is asking you to provide a DBS check prior to starting your volunteering and you need help with the process, email us at [email protected] to find out what support we maybe able to offer you.

How to apply for a DBS (formerly CRB) check

Information on the DBS check (a criminal record check) process is usually provided by your host organisation, so we recommend you contact them for details on application. Details of applying are also available on the official DBS webpage.

Generally, your host organisation will provide you with a form to complete along with proof of identity (name, address, date of birth). This information will then be securely passed to the DBS service who will reply in due course to confirm your status. The process can often take around 8 weeks, so please bear this in mind when arranging your role.

Volunteering while the DBS checks are being made

This is up to the organisation, but generally, once your CRB form has been submitted for process, you should be able to start volunteering. In exceptional circumstances (for example, if working with children), the organisation might want to wait for the results of your DBS check before you can volunteer with them, but they will advise you about this.
