New students advised to protect against meningitis
1 September 2015
The vaccine will provide protection against Meningococcal disease which can cause meningitis (inflammation of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning) that can kill in hours. Contraction of either often leads to severe disability. This is a very important programme which the University strongly urges students to engage with before going to university.
If you live in the UK, you will be contacted by your doctor in August to be invited to attend a clinic for the vaccination. The University strongly recommends that students take up this invitation to receive the immunisation before starting university.
For students living outside the UK and have not received the vaccination before enrolment at the University, you should register with a new doctor, close to where you will be living and studying, and request the MenACWY vaccination.
Read more information about the programme and the vaccination on the NHS website.
