This module explains the role of airports and considers the different forms of airport ownership and management by analysing commercialisation, privatisation and globalisation developments. You will examine the economic and service characteristics of airports, the role of marketing, and the airport’s impact on the economy, society and the environment, as well as evaluating the relationships with airlines, passengers, retailers and other customers.
The syllabus content includes the nature of airport operations and patterns of demand, revenue and cost structures, measuring airport economic performance, the airport-airline relationship (including airport charges, regulation and slots), commercial and non-aeronautical facilities and services at airports, service quality and the passenger experience, and economic, social and environmental impacts. By the time you complete the module you will be able to evaluate the changing organisational structure within which airports operate, explain the economic and service characteristics of airports, and analyse the relationship between the airport and its different customers. You will also be able to assess the broader economic, social and environmental impacts of airports.
Teaching and learning will be delivered mainly through lectures, supported by seminars and tutorials. Assessment is based around an individual report and a seminar paper.
This module will only be available from 2017/18 academic year.
