The future is both exciting and scary. The graduate of today is likely to be working for 50 years, during which time the industry you begin your career in and the wider world will change beyond all recognition. This module will help you to develop the knowledge and skills you will need to build sustainable careers in a shifting, fast-changing world. It will explore possible futures across a range of perspectives from architecture to politics, fashion to economics. You will acquire the skills needed to consider how your place in the world will be impacted and what you should consider to help maintain a successful and fulfilling working life.
This module is intended to complement the more specifically focused professional practice and career planning modules you might study on your course, by focusing on the next 20 or 30 years and giving you tools to think about the future. Subjects covered include:
- the history of the future;
- scenario planning;
- applying trend analysis and design thinking;
- corporate foresight and future sightedness.
Learning and teaching will mainly be through practical workshops, focusing on student discussion, supplemented by presentations, lectures, guest speakers, tutorials and external visits. Assessment will be through a group presentation and an individual report.
