This module considers the nature of creativity, and the importance of creativity for the media industries, for new forms of digital and social media, and for society in general. It introduces you to current theoretical approaches to creativity and innovation. It encourages you to make connections between the literature on creativity and your own creative practice and gives you the skills that will help you to develop and communicate creative and innovative ideas. You will take part in creative exercises, go on field trips, and discuss creativity from a number of angles, from individual psychology and artistic expression to organisational questions of how creativity can be managed, and encouraged.
Teaching and learning will include a combination of lectures, seminars, practical workshops, tutorials, and site visits to galleries and other relevant locations.
Assessment will be based on two pieces of coursework. The first will be a 2000 word long essay that addresses the debates and ideas explored in the module. The second will be a video presentation of 8–10 minutes. The video will be assessed according to its creative approach to communicating and analysing ideas, not according to its professional production quality.
