This module presents a dynamic overview of current trends and issues in the tourism sector. It aims to provide you with a deeper understanding of the background, nature and implications of current tourism issues and topics. Teaching and learning sessions will focus on subjects that highlight the changing nature of tourism and its industries, such as the emergence of new business models, destinations and markets, and on external factors that influence the tourism industry such as climate change and world or political events.

This is a sociological module, which uses examples from around the world. The syllabus content will include new and emerging markets and destinations for tourism, gap year and volunteer tourism, health tourism, second homes, climate change and peak oil, globalisation and demographic change, access to tourism, and slum tourism.

Teaching and learning will be structured around a lecture and seminar session each week, with a new topic introduced on a weekly basis. One-to-one or small group tutorials will also be available at strategic points in the module, to support the assessments. The assessment will be based equally on a closed exam, and on an individual essay which will allow you to explore in more depth a topic from the course which interests you.
