Transparency for Upholstering and Cabinet Making Qualifications and Quality in the European Furniture Industry

Professor Linda Clarke, of ProBE, is currently involved in this project in an evaluator role. This is part of the European Commission Leonardo project, October 2012 - September 2014.

The project aims to develop two common European competence profiles for upholsterers and cabinet makers who together make up some 50% of skilled workers in the European wood
and furniture sector.

Against the background of globalisation and increasingly required flexibility of the workforce, demographic developments and growing demand for skilled workers in the sector as well as for transparency in education and qualifications, it is necessary to make a concrete effort to go beyond the mere comparison of educational systems and the respective recognition of qualifications. Although the national systems of vocational education vary widely, the work processes and resulting competence requirements are very similar.

The project aims to make use of this by developing profiles based on these similarities.
The profiles to be developed will be based on an extensive examination of national qualifications and competence requirements in the sector and will also take into account future needs.

The project results will be fed into the existing European social dialogue and disseminated widely across Europe. The longterm goal of these activities is to achieve a broad acceptance
and mutual recognition of the core occupation profiles. The project consortium consists of social partners, their European umbrella organisations and training providers. We involve stakeholders of the wood and furniture industry as surrounding partners and as experts in our advisory board.

Countries involved include:

  • Belgium
  • Bulgaria
  • Denmark
  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Romania
