Allen Alexander Coppin, currently studying Business Management (Entrepreneurship) BA Honours course at the University of Westminster, was selected as a top ten finalist in the Mayor’s Entrepreneur Competition for his Electric Vehicle Charging Network project.

The Mayor’s Entrepreneur competition challenges London’s students to think of ways to improve the city and to come up with a great entrepreneurial idea that could make London a better place to live and work.

Westminster student Allen Alexander Coppin’s idea, entitled ‘Electric Vehicle Charging Network’, which was selected as a finalist, aims to help people switch to electric vehicles by addressing their charging needs. Allen is creating a new online system which could support the community to share their personal home chargers with each other, alongside educating new vehicle owners by building a network.

The project focused on creating easy-to-use, large and friendly networks across the UK whilst providing confidence for future electric car owners and approaching it from an environmentally friendly point of view.

Allen was shortlisted in the top ten from 468 applications from 37 higher education institutions. He had the opportunity to pitch his innovative idea ‘Dragon’s Den’ style at an award ceremony which took place on Monday 16 April. Allen presented his project to a panel of judges including James Bardrick, CEO of Citi UK, Richard Reed CBE, Founder of Innocent Drinks and Shirley Rodrigues, London Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy.

Speaking about his successful project, Allen said: “I am proud to say I was one of the top ten finalists. Already, I have learnt an incredible amount and having so much fun with it all, and from all my past business ventures, I have never done something this big. I believe this will be game changing to the UK, it will be electrifying! The competition was tough, although I didn’t win the award I can say I won the award for learning the most in 2 months. I am currently looking for web/app developers, for those who want to help put that spark into electric vehicle driving, get in touch.”

Dr Jane Chang, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at Westminster Business School and Allen’s tutor, said: "I am very proud that for consecutive years, our entrepreneurship students have been selected in the finals embracing social innovation for London."
