The CIPD’s annual Human Resource Development Conference and Exhibition migrated West this year from EdExCel to Olympia with a more compact layout. The WBS stand was situated opposite the CIPD’s information stand and was well positioned for Tricia Price’s pitch on the new HRM Masters programmes. Interest in the PG Cert in Coaching and Mentoring at Work was also high with its burst mode delivery rendering it a feasible option for the busy professional, ably championed by Józefa Fawcett. Equally Bill Spear’s MA in Strategic HRM inspired interest as a one year Masters delivered in the burst mode option. Other courses exciting interest were the full and part-time MBA and the new part-time Marketing Masters as well as the professional accountancy exam courses.
An evening of professional development was offered to those completing contact slips. The event, orchestrated by Tricia Price, saw a band of eager participants and curious colleagues arriving to accept our invitation. Laurel Herman delivered an interactive session on You Are Your Own Business Card at the CEPA centre. Laurel explained the influencing skills of bridging and flagging as well as ensuring that we appreciated the value of the personal touch in networking follow ups. Practical skills were mixed with participant reflections and Laurel’s experience of those who had already tried the tips. The group stayed on after her talk to discuss the elements including practicing their 90 second 'elevator pitch' and networking skills.
