Accounting Finance and Governance department employability evening – CISI Education Trust Award and Alumni talks

Accounting, Finance and Economics 17 February 2017

Alumni from the Accounting, Finance and Governance department visited Marylebone Campus on Wednesday 8 February to share their employment experiences with students.

The event was organised by course leaders Dr Abdelhafid Benamraoui and Dr Petar Sudar and was a very successful night.

The evening began with an award ceremony, when Professor Malcolm Kirkup, Dean of Westminster Business School, presented the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investments (CISI) Educational Trust Award to the winner.

Maria Alejandra Zambrano Carvajal received the award and a cheque for £1,000. She is a student graduating from the Investment and Risk Finance MSc programme. Westminster Business School is a CISI Centre of Excellence and the student was recognised by the University and the professional body for the high standard of her academic work in a CISI accredited Finance course.

After the award ceremony was over, Waheed Qaiser, Chairman CEO of Inclusive Payment Solutions Ltd gave an inspiring and informative presentation on the skills and competencies that employers are now looking for in finance and accounting graduates. Then three alumni from the department gave an entertaining account of their learning experiences at Westminster Business School.

Each presenter candidly revealed how their determination to build on their success at university helped to shape their subsequent careers. Presentations were delivered by:

  • Alisa Raykhman: Graduated in 2014 with Finance with Management BSc and now works as an Equity Trader at UBS Investment Bank
  • Mohammed Rahman: Graduated in 2015 with Accounting with Management BSc and now works as a Management Consultant at CORETX
  • Feng Jin: Graduated in 2011 with Business Studies – Finance BA and works as a Financial Reporting Analyst at UBM

Louise Bamford from the University of Westminster Career Development Centre (CDC) was also on hand to give students some advice and information about accessing the University’s service.

Students who attended the employability event said:

“I found the event very useful as only third-year students were invited. Hearing from alumni who used to be part of the BSc Finance course, which I am currently undertaking, was very inspiring as I had the opportunity to see how far a Finance degree from Westminster Business School can take me in my finance career aspirations” - Taha Kaawan, Level 6, Finance with Management BSc

"The employability event held for finance and accounting level 6 students had a great impact on me and my peers. The event gave us insights into alumni who are currently thriving in the field of finance and accounting.

The event also allowed us to ask questions on job applications and interviews and to find out the best option to follow after completing the undergraduate degree in terms of pursuing postgraduate qualifications or applying for jobs. Finally, I would like to note that the event was a great success and personally I would like to be a part of future employability events in the area of finance and accounting.” - Nayem Hamid, Level 6, Finance with Management BSc
