University of Westminster celebrates English Tourism Week
Tourism and Events 21 March 2019
The series of events will run throughout the week and take place at several locations both at the University and in central London. The events will include social networking, tours, a panel discussion and a cultural exhibition.
VisitBritain’s annual English Tourism Week, in collaboration with VisitEngland, celebrates and highlights the value and quality of tourism with a series of events showcasing visitors’ experiences in England.
This year, students from the Event Design and Management MA course will showcase some events and give the opportunity to both industry professionals and the public to take part in the week’s celebration.
The week will kick off with the launch event ‘Launch LDN’, taking place on Monday 1 April in the Cellar at the Gable bar of Tiger Tiger. This year celebrates the theme of ‘Discovering Urban London’, where attendees will have the chance to hear from representatives from the University’s Tourism Society and the coordinators of each event held throughout the week.
On Tuesday 2 April, The University’s Marylebone Campus will host an imaginary interactive getaway to sunny Havana, Cuba, entitled ‘A Goodness Getaway’. The session will provide attendees with useful tips and information on mindful and healthy travelling, and offer a virtual walking tour of the city as well as a creative interactive session by the beach and much more.
London visitors will also have the chance to learn more about the city with an insightful event called ‘Unexplored London: A Photomarathon on the Streets of your City’ taking place on Wednesday 3 April. The session will use a uniquely designed, behind-the-scenes map of the city, and enable attendees to see all the undiscovered sights of central London. Later in the day, students will also host a two-hour event, entitled ‘TogetHER: Women in Tourism & Events Speaker Panel’, featuring female leaders from the Tourism industry discussing trending topics including the gender pay gap and the underrepresentation of females in the Tourism and Events field.
The week will continue with a fun ‘Rock n’ Crawl Camden’ tour taking place on Thursday 4 April in the heart of Camden Town. The event will take participants to historic music pubs where they will have the chance to test their rock history knowledge and earn goodies during the interactive pub tour.
The week will finally conclude on Friday 5 April with ‘CULTUREVERSE’, a fun-filled, vibrant experience through the universe of culture. The event will take place at the University’s Regent Campus and will be hosted by the University’s cultural societies who will showcase the Institution’s rich culture through interactive workshops, music, dance and a cultural fashion show.
Speaking about the series of events put together by students, Chiara Orefice, Senior Lecturer in Events, said: “Tourism Week is the flagship annual event of the UoW Tourism Society aimed at creating collaborations with internal and external partners. As well as raising awareness about the university involvement in Tourism and Events education and research, the synergy with the MA course is allowing us to offer an exciting opportunity for our students to develop their event design and project management skills. We aim at attracting as many members of the public as possible to take part alongside our current and prospective students.”
