‘What it Takes’ event series hosts successful lecture on ‘how to ace an interview’ with alumnus Adrian Thomas

Adrian, a Personal Management alumnus, who is now Head of Executive Recruitment at Civil Service, and a recognised expert in Human Resources and Recruitment, provided attendees with practical advice and tips on how to successfully approach a job interview.
Attended by over 150 guests, Adrian’s presentation showed students how to handle an ‘application journey’, and advised on how to identify the right role and how to successfully prepare for both the application and interview process.
Throughout the talk, Adrian outlined what can make a difference during interviews and what might make people stand out, for the right and the wrong reasons. He recommended key points to follow and stressed the importance of being punctual, making eye contact and remaining positive and energetic during the process.
He said: “You only need to come top in one interview to have a job. Stop applying for hundreds of jobs, start applying for five to eight and really spend some time working on those applications. It is also important to know yourself, prepare, have confidence and think about your strengths.”
With experience spanning over 35 years, Adrian has worked for some of the UK’s largest employers within the pharmaceutical, finance, public and transportation sectors. For nearly 15 years, Adrian was Director and Vice-President of the Association of Graduate Recruitment, now the Institute of Student Employment.
Four years ago, Adrian was asked by the Government to undertake an independent review of the English Fire and Rescue service, following which he was invited to join the Civil Service and lead the recruitment of the most senior Civil Servants- a position he continues to hold. Adrian is a current member of the RL100 (an invitation-only group of Recruitment Leaders) and also chairs the Recruitment Society, a not-for-profit organisation promoting best practice in recruitment.
The next event in the series, ‘What it Takes to be an Entrepreneur’, will take place on Thursday 15 November and will feature Journalism graduate Charly Lester, Cognitive Science alumnus Alex Potter and Fashion Business Management alumna Taylor Semelsberger.
