University of Westminster welcomes over 1000 Open Day guests
14 October 2018
Visitors to the Harrow Campus were treated to music performances from the University’s current music students and at the Regent and Cavendish Campuses, prospective students were toured around the campus facilities where they met current students and academics.
Guests to the Marylebone Campus were able to collect a paper ‘Bitcoin* wallet’ worth 5000 Satoshi’s when they visited the Financial Markets Suite to encourage them to explore the nature of a cryptocurrency.
They weren’t given any information about the value of the wallet or any investment advice. The wallets were given out in the form of flyer and were designed to provide an early educational immersion in contemporary currencies to provide a taster of some of the teaching in our financial courses.
The flyers contain instructions on how to top up their wallets, but any recipients will need to find out how to open and sweep the account to find out the monetary value.
If 5000 Satoshis had been deposited in 2010, the value today would be £10million – so prospective students may want to keep hold of their wallets!
Bitcoin* is one of the cryptocurrencies whose value has grown exponentially through speculative trading in peer-to-peer networks. Paper wallets were one of the first methods of sharing the currency created in the cryptocurrency community. Bitcoin transactions are stored and transferred using a distributed ledger system on a peer-to-peer network. It is open, unregulated, public and anonymous with secure Blockchain technology underpinning it to maintain the digital currency transaction ledger.
The University is a CISI Centre of Excellence, a CFA UAP and an ACCA Gold Approved University Training Partner. It has strong affiliations and recognition with other professional bodies in delivering quality financial and accountancy qualifications and education to our local and international learning communities.
