Rebecca Freeman with her Women in Property Award

The National Property Award, run by the Association of Women in Property (WiP), seeks the most talented young women in the region.

A national property award is in sight for Rebecca Freeman, a current student on the Building Surveying BSc Honours course in the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment.

Rebecca won the South East (London area) Women in Property Student Awards, also run by the WiP, where she competed against 21 other regional finalists also studying built environment degree courses.

Rebecca, who is already employed by the Watford Community Housing Trust while she studies, was nominated by Senior Lecturer John David Begg who teaches Rebecca on her course at the University of Westminster. Speaking about the nomination he said: “Rebecca has such a positive attitude towards her studies and has brought her ‘real world’ experience into the classroom.”

Marcia Gillings, Chairman of the WiP South East branch, said: “These Awards seek out the most talented students studying built environment courses, which can include planning to surveying, architecture to engineering, project management to property finance, so a broad spectrum of disciplines.

“We aim to raise the bar, by challenging the students to really evaluate their subject, how they hope to progress towards a career and help them develop the skills they will need along the way. All this year’s finalists have done really well and our congratulations go to Rebecca. We wish her the very best for the national final.”

Rebecca said: “The WiP regional award has given me the opportunity to meet people from different disciplines in construction and listen to their views and opinions on the industry, while showcasing my own skills. It’s been such a positive and exciting experience and I look forward to the national competition.”

The Award is sponsored by Bouygues, Cushman & Wakefield and Linden Homes, and will be judged by Lottie Tollman from Cushman & Wakefield, Adrian Sims of Linden Homes, Ken Mackay, founder of Mackay & Partners, and Chris Stevens from Bougues-UK.

Adrian Sims of Linden Homes commented on the regional Awards: “We had a tough decision to make; the standard of all the contenders is extremely high but, ultimately, Rebecca just had the edge. This is a great opportunity for the students to test themselves in front of industry professionals; and, as judges, we are able to look out for superb potential employees. The knowledge and passion for the industry they demonstrated is impressive and I’ve no doubt that all the students we saw have a bright future in this diverse sector.”

Rebecca won a cash prize of £300 and a trophy. She will be competing against 12 students from across the country at the national Best of Best final and black tie Awards Dinner, which will be held on 20 September at Claridge’s in London.
