Westminster Film and Photography BA Alumna wins Best Animated Short Award at Tribeca Festival

Television, Film and Moving Image 23 May 2017

Odd is an Egg

Kristin Ulseth, a Film and Photography BA course graduate from the University of Westminster, recently won the Best Animated Short Award at the 16th Tribeca Film Festival taking place in New York.

Westminster Alumna Kristin Ulseth won the Best Animated Short Award at Tribeca Festival for her film ‘Odd is an Egg’ which she co-wrote, produced and directed. ‘Odd is an Egg’ was also screened as part of the ‘Shorts: Animated Shorts Curated by Whoopi Goldberg’ programme as one of the several films selected by actor Whoopi Goldberg herself.

The film story and illustrations, based upon Norwegian author Lisa Aisato’s book ‘Odd er et egg’, follows character Odd, terrified of his head to be broken until one day, he falls in love with Gunn, a fearless and happy character who will help Odd to break free from his worries in the most unexpected way.

The award-winning Westminster graduate said about her film: “I wanted to give the film a modern look and feel in the storytelling, yet keep the classic hand drawn style of Lisa’s drawings. We used a combination of 2D and 3D techniques in order to recreate Lisa’s visual style, and created the two main characters in 3D but giving them a 2D look, and animating them like 2D characters in order to achieve the particular style and feel. The result is a very unique look that allowed us freedom in the storytelling, not rushing for action or slapstick, but trying to build genuine moments in the portrayed relationship between the two characters.”

She added: “It was a long way from Harrow College at the University of Westminster to winning the award for Best Animated Short at Tribeca Film Festival’s exclusive Animated Shorts program curated by Whoopi Goldberg. It has been an adventurous 25 years working in a number of roles and formats in the Nordic Film and Television industry. Starting off as a stills photographer, my BA in Photo, Film and Video opened up a world of insights, which I later pursued with great passion once the opportunities came my way. The award is a great inspiration to continue fighting for projects I am passionate about, no matter if it’s as a producer, director or writer.”

‘Odd is and Egg’ was also selected for the Generation Kplus program at the Berlin International Film Festival. It has since been screened at and selected for a number of upcoming festivals including Animasfest in Zagreb Festival, Busan International Children’s Film Festival in South Korea and Zlin Film Festival in Hungary.
