Westminster Applied Biotechnology Research Group involved in major European research project developing high-demand biopolymers

Westminster researchers from the Applied Biotechnology Research Group are contributing to a major European research project called ‘PolyBioSkin’ aiming to broaden the use of biopolymers in biomedical, cosmetic and sanitary skin-contact applications.

PolyBioSkin is an international and interdisciplinary three-year research project uniting 12 European organisations from seven countries, including universities and research centres, SMEs and the European Bioplastics industry association.

The research will seek to provide functionally improved, significantly more sustainable, and price-competitive everyday products, namely baby diapers, facial beauty masks, and non-woven tissue to be used in wound dressings.

PolyBioSkin will also unlock ecological and economical opportunities by substituting conventional fossil-based materials with more sustainable bio-based alternatives in high-value market segments. The project’s innovations will improve waste management practices by focusing on organic and mechanical recycling as an alternative to incineration and landfilling, and continuity to the circular bio economy.

The research has received a 4 million Euro grant from the BioBased Industries Joint Undertaking under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

The Westminster researchers’ team, contributing to the research, started the project in June 2017. Talking about PolyBioSkin, Professor Ipsita Roy, who leads the Applied Biotechnology Research Group at the University of Westminster, said: “This project will allow us to develop novel Biobased polymers of bacterial origin, Polyhydroxyalkanotes, for wound healing applications and to create a large scale facility for medical grade polymer production, a great step forward both from the academic and commercial point of view.”
