Westminster academics’ research paper recognised with the Best Paper Award in Saint Petersburg

Marketing 24 February 2017

A research paper by Westminster academics Moustafa Haj Youssef and Ioannis Christodoulou, titled 'Managerial Discretion in Emerging Markets: What's New', received the Best Paper Award at the GSOM Emerging Markets Conference, which was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Moustafa Haj Youssef, a final year doctoral researcher and Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Marketing and Business Strategy, and Ioannis Christodoulou, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Marketing and Business Strategy, presented their research at the annual conference, organised by the Graduate School of Management at Saint Petersburg State University.

Based on a sample of six Arabian countries, the study examines how CEO discretion is affected by different cultural practices, demonstrating the positive relationship between power distance, future orientation and managerial discretion. The research also proves that institutional collectivism, uncertainty avoidance and humane orientation influence the degree of discretion provided to CEOs in a negative way.

Speaking of the award, Moustafa Haj said: “Receiving the Best Paper Award for our research means a lot to me personally as a final year doctoral researcher. It shows the appreciation from top scholars and the value of the contributions that are presented in our research. Our paper has introduced new insights in relation to the cultural influence on the CEOs latitude of actions and have extended the national-level dimension of managerial discretion, a key construct in the strategic management literature.”
