Key players in the music industry including Young Turks / XL Recordings, Island Records, Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Universal Music Group, Sony Music, Clintons law firm and Warner Music have come together to establish the ‘Richard Antwi Scholarship’ at the University of Westminster. The fund will sponsor talent from the UK Black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) community in memory of the much-loved entertainment lawyer and music manager.

Donors, music industry professionals and members of Richard’s family gathered at the University of Westminster’s Regent Street Cinema on Tuesday 14 November to launch the scholarship in his memory for the next academic year.

The scholarship will provide full support to one student each year, on the highly regarded Music Business Management MA course. It will cover tuition fees, a contribution to living expenses and include an opportunity to undertake work experience during the course, providing a strong foundation for the recipient’s progress towards a career in the entertainment industry.

Richard Antwi, who unexpectedly passed away in February 2016 at the age of 38, was a widely respected entertainment lawyer, manager and entrepreneur, whose untimely death triggered a flood of tributes from across the music industry. Richard built his reputation structuring deals across the industry in the UK and USA. A leading light in the UK Grime scene, Richard Antwi has been credited with a pivotal role in the careers of Wretch 32, Daley, Lethal Bizzle and Mr. Hudson. Growing up in north west London in a Ghanaian family, Richard Antwi went to a local comprehensive school. Antwi went on to study law at the University of Oxford, and then became a very successful lawyer and music manager. He regularly mentored young entrepreneurs in the BAME community, and contributed to the Music Business Management MA course at the University of Westminster as a guest speaker.

Sally-Anne Gross, Course Leader for the Music Business Management MA course, said: “The MA Music Business Management course is honoured to host this award in Richard’s name and we very much hope that this award will be contributing to producing some of the future music industry leaders.”

Applications open early 2018 and the first Richard Antwi scholar will start their course at the University of Westminster in September 2018.
