Westminster to provide IELTS exams for EU nurses and midwives under new rules

IELTS exam

Under current rules, medical professionals from outside the European Economic Area are required to take a test to register as practitioners in the UK. This is now extended to those coming from the EU. If nurses and midwives cannot provide evidence of their English language skills – such as having trained or worked in an English-speaking country – they will need to take an officially recognised English language test, according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

It is estimated that more than 690,000 nurses and midwives are registered with the NMC. Around 66,000 of these come from non-EU countries and 33,000 from the EU.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for education and global migration. It is accepted by over 9,000 organisations worldwide, including schools, universities, employers, immigration authorities and professional bodies.

The University of Westminster’s IELTS centre – the second-largest IELTS testing facility in the UK – currently examines around 5,000 candidates each year. The centre provides comfortable and friendly exam conditions, and a state-of-the-art sound system. The IELTS test is offered on up to two Saturdays per month throughout the year at the University, and all four test components including the speaking test are held on the same day at the same location.

In a recent survey for the Westminster’s IELTS centre candidates said that staff were friendly and helpful and that they would recommend the centre to a friend.

"We pride ourselves on having an experienced and professional team who ensure the best-possible customer journey", said Tony Salvador, IELTS Centre Exams Manager at the University of Westminster.
