Frances, Lady Sorrell, Chancellor of the University of Westminster was awarded an OBE for her services to Art and Design and Education in the Queen’s Birthday Honours this weekend.

Lady Sorrell, who has been our Chancellor since June 2015, is also co-founder and co-chair of the Sorrell Foundation, which was established in 1999 to foster confidence and creativity in young people.

The Sorrell Foundation has worked with more than 10,000 school students over the past 17 years and developed ground-breaking initiatives, such as the National Art & Design Saturday Club and the Young Design Programme, which provide new pathways into the creative industries.

Prior to establishing the Sorrell Foundation with her husband, Sir John Sorrell, Lady Sorrell (neé Newell) made her name in business as co-founder of Newell and Sorrell, one of Europe’s biggest and most successful design businesses. As creative director at the organisation she won over 100 awards for creativity and effectiveness.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Geoffrey Petts said: “Frances' dedication and commitments to young people who are seeking to find their way in the creative industries is exemplary and one of the many reasons we are delighted she is Chancellor of the University of Westminster.  We warmly congratulate her on this deserved award and recognition.”
