University of Westminster academics release new publication on enhancing teaching practice

3 May 2016

Helen Pokorny

Helen Pokorny and members of the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Course Team have published a new book titled Enhancing Teaching Practice in Higher Education.

Enhancing Teaching Practice in Higher Education provides practical strategies, ideas, techniques and approaches to teaching in higher education drawn from literature and real-life experience, using examples from a variety of disciplines.

Helen Pokorny, Principal Lecturer in Learning and Teaching at the University of Westminster, and Digby Warren, Head of the Centre for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching at London Metropolitan University, edited the book which focuses on the changing landscape of teaching in higher education.

Colleagues from the Department of Leadership and Professional Development at Westminster contributed key chapters to the book:

  • Dr Steven Cranfield considers how different environments or settings within which students are asked or required to learn have an impact on how they approach their learning and on the design and delivery of teaching.
  • Sibyl Coldham and Dr Pauline Armsby outline a range of approaches to developing work related skills and attributes looking at the development of students’ confidence in, and experience of, work processes during their university study.
  • Jennifer Bright and Dr Rebecca Eliahoo consider a range of approaches to professional development including mentoring practice, approaches to peer review of teaching and the role of ‘mindfulness’ in professional development and HE teaching.

Other chapters consider approaches to course and learning design, assessment for learning, blended learning, student engagement, embracing student diversity, engaging with academic writing and discourse and effective research supervision.

Of the book Professor Sally Brown, Emerita Professor at Leeds Beckett University says:

"This timely book contains a wealth of practical advice while being soundly research informed and evidence-based. At a time when globally Higher Education Institutions are seeking ways to recognise and reward teaching excellence, this book is invaluable. ”

Enhancing Teaching Practice in Higher Education is published by SAGE.
