David Ferreira, who graduated from the Fashion Design BA Honours course in June 2015, won the prestigious Fashion Scout Merit Award.

David fought off fierce competition from over 200 emerging designers from around the globe. By winning the Merit Award AW16, he has also won the chance to showcase his collection at London Fashion Week this month.

The Merit Award is designed to support up-and-coming designers and to help develop their business worldwide. Previous winners of the award include James Kelly, Gyo Yuni Kimchoe, William Tempest and David Koma.

David, who was raised in Portugal, is renowned for his unconventional take on traditional couture. He gained experience working for designers such Iris van Herpen, Giles Deacon and Meadham Kirchhoff.

Shown as part of the VFILES runway show on New York Fashion Week in 2015, his graduate collection was well-received in the fashion press, with the New York Observer comparing him to John Galliano. MTV News said that "this is what happens when the downtown cool kids get a hold of evening couture, and it is awesome."

Fashion Design BA Honours Course Director Andrew Groves said: "This is fantastic news that David has won the prize and is a testament to his unique talent and his amazing design skills. I know he will continue to create fashion that is both creative and visionary, and I look forward to seeing his new collection at London Fashion Week."

Martyn Roberts, Founder and Creative Director of Fashion Scout, said: “David’s Westminster Graduate Collection was critically acclaimed by press and media and he has such a strong vision. Fashion Scout is renowned around the world for showcasing and nurturing the freshest international talent and David definitely fits this.”

David Ferreira’s collection will be showcased at London Fashion Week on Friday 19 February 2016 at 5.30pm.
