Tourism, Hospitality and Events “Ask the Experts” Careers Panel

The event was organised by the University’s Career Development Centre in conjunction with Tourism lecturers from the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment.
The panel featured six professionals from the tourism and events industry. Panellists included five Westminster alumni: Konstanze Auernheimer, Director of Europe Planning and Transformation at Marriott Hotels; Barbara Calleja, Operations Manager at Off to Work Recruitment Ltd; Jarmila Galikova, Events and Exhibitions Executive at London & Partners; Neill Hendry, Head UK Division MICE-Melia Hotels International; and Ben Lassman, Director of Blue Case Management. Gregory Yeoman, Executive Director of The Tourism Society, also featured in the panel and spoke of the membership benefits of the society.
Ben Lassman, a PR and Events Entrepreneur who graduated in 2006 from the Tourism with Business BA Honours course, and who didn’t take a traditional career path, gave a talk on how he successfully set up his own international PR and events agency called Blue Case Management. The agency supports corporate clients, governments, celebrities, NGO’s and charities in their work in the developing world.
“I was asked by one of my lecturers if I wouldn’t mind coming to speak at the ‘Ask the Experts' Careers Panel about my career path. After doing so, I must say it was an absolute pleasure. It was a really diverse panel and the students seemed really engaged with all of the speakers. I thought the structure of the event was fantastic and allowed the students a more focused look at their career options for after their course finishes. Really pleased I did it and would happily do a similar event again” said Ben.
The event was designed to give students the chance to hear from successful professionals from the Tourism industry. A series of short presentations took place in front of a packed audience of undergraduate and postgraduate Tourism and Event Management students eager to gain tips and expertise from industry professionals.
Students were given advice on how to develop their career in the tourism, hospitality and event management sectors. They were also introduced to opportunities offered by many of the companies and learnt first-hand about what employers are looking for in terms of skills, knowledge and experience.
