Biomedical Sciences 12 June 2015

Dr Geoffrey Guy, founder and chairman of GW Pharmaceuticals, one of the most successful start-up pharmaceutical companies leading the way into the use of cannabis for medical purposes, will lead a public lecture at the University of Westminster on Wednesday 8 July.

The lecture entitled Cannabis based medicines - A modern reality will offer the opportunity to hear from Dr Guy and gain further insight into the use of cannabis-related compounds in medicine. The use of cannabis for medical purposes continues to attract much debate and interest, and with over 30 years’ experience in medical research and global drug development, Dr Guy will discuss this hotly debated topic and provide insight into its future potential.

From a look at the medicinal properties of cannabis and its pharmaceutical journey from 'medicinal plant' to pharmaceutical product, Dr Guy will discuss current clinical uses and trials and the future potential of cannabis to treat major illness.

Dr Guy has been the physician in charge of over 200 clinical studies including first dose in man, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, dose-ranging, controlled clinical trials and large scale multi-centred studies and clinical surveys. He is also an author on numerous scientific publications and has contributed to six books.

Professor Jimmy Bell, University of Westminster, said: “This public lecture is an excellent opportunity to hear from one of the leading physicians investigating the use of cannabis for medical purposes. The Department of Life Sciences has a long-standing research program into the clinical investigation and use of medicinal plants. Dr Guy’s lecture will provide further insight into the debate surrounding the effects of cannabis in treating health and disease.”

The Department of Life Sciences is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology, which provides a rich portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, which focus on both mainstream and specialist subjects such as applied Biotechnology and Medical Molecular Biology. The Faculty is a centre of research excellence in Life Sciences, with expertise extending to biotechnology, human performance, public health nutrition and wellbeing.
