Lady Sorrell announced as Chancellor of the University of Westminster

Frances, Lady Sorrell, the inspirational education campaigner and businesswoman, has been appointed as the University of Westminster’s new Chancellor in a ceremony at St Marylebone Parish Church on Wednesday 24 June.

Lady Sorrell is co-founder and co-chair of the Sorrell Foundation, which was established in 1999, to foster confidence and creativity in young people. In her celebrated career, Frances has worked with thousands of school pupils through the Foundation’s initiatives, such as the National Art & Design Saturday Club, which provide new pathways into the creative industries.

Prior to establishing the Sorrell Foundation with her husband, Sir John Sorrell, Frances (neé Newell) made her name in business as co-founder of Newell and Sorrell, one of Europe’s biggest and most successful design businesses. As creative director at the organisation Frances won over 100 awards for creativity and effectiveness.

Professor Geoff Petts, Vice Chancellor of the University of Westminster, said: “With substantial achievements in education and industry, we are very excited to welcome Lady Sorrell to the University. For nearly two centuries, the University of Westminster has been focused on supporting people improve their life chances and these are values that Lady Sorrell has exemplified throughout her education campaign and business life.”

Lady Sorrell said: “I’m honoured to have been appointed as Chancellor and delighted to join a University with a deeply held ethos around diversity and equality of opportunity. I am looking forward to supporting its work on student mobility and global employer engagement. I’m very excited about helping Westminster provide a springboard to future career and life success."
