Department of Architecture hosts experimental PLAY Week in refurbished studio

Architecture and Interiors 3 December 2015

With workshops ran by tutors from the University of Westminster’s Department of Architecture, Westminster staff and students experimented in the new architecture studio space in many exciting ways during the Department’s PLAY Week taking place in the week commencing 9 November. Participants could also make use of the new Fabrication Laboratory Westminster, which provides an inspiring and engaging learning environment for digital fabrication in the 21st century.

PLAY Week successfully provided staff and students with the opportunity to explore and present an area of interest they may otherwise not had the time of freedom to investigate in their everyday teaching and learning. The event was open to all staff and students.

In the one-day Air Structures Workshop led by Architecture student Laylac Shahed and Principal Lecturer Will McLean, a group of 30 students created an inflatable cube, sphere and cylinder alongside an Air Beam Arch that spanned the newly refurbished architecture studios and an innovative pneumatic spaceframe system. The inflated products of the workshop were later used as a backdrop for the evening symposium event, entitled ‘What is at play in Environmental Design?’, which was organised by Senior Lecturer Jon Goodbun. Speakers at the session entitled Alternative Practices Symposium also included Vicky Richardson, Director of Architecture, Design and Fashion at the British Council.

Inspiring more than 2,000 students at the University’s award winning Faculty of Architecture and Built Environment in the heart of London, the new architecture studios uphold the University of Westminster as one of the UK’s leading centres for the study of Architecture and the Built Environment.

The University of Westminster’s Department of Architecture is part of the Faculty of Architecture and the Build Environment located at the University’s Marylebone Campus.
