Westminster Fashion Design students and graduates make waves in Fashion Week season
Fashion 14 February 2014
Mary Benson at New York Fashion Week:
Nokia partnered with third year Westminster Fashion Design BA Honours student Mary Benson in a New York Fashion Week opening showcase.
As reviewed in i-D, her “mirrored and holographic designs were reflected, refracted and re-imagined at the whim and fancy of the camera wielding collective”. Lyricist Kilo Kish performed wearing one of her custom made designs.
Mary said: "I've got some great tutors [at Westminster] who are so creative and inspiring. My degree show is in May and I got some really useful sponsorship from Lampo zips in Italy and Nokia, which is amazing because now I can make my collection even more exciting."
Louise Alsop and Ashley Williams at London Fashion Week:
When interviewed for i-D, Louise also gave her ex-class mates a mention: “My class was full of insanely talented people, and we all had a sweet time together. I’d check out Aaron Tubb (Menswear), Victoria Rowe and Grace Cooper (both Womenswear). Claire Barrow and Ashley Williams also both went to Westminster so it was great to see what they’ve both achieved and learn by their example.” In Love magazine she is quoted as saying: “I did feel insanely lucky to be at Westminster. We always helped each other out and had a laugh – and now we’re finished, it’s an exciting time for all of us.”
Ashley Williams, who is doing her third and final catwalk show with Fashion East, is described in dazeddigital as “one of London fashion’s fastest rising upstarts”.
Philli Wood collection stocked at Warehouse to coincide with London Fashion Week:
Since graduating in 2012, Claire Williams' clients have included celebrities such as Rihanna as well as fashion brand Joseph and luxury retailer MATCHESFASHION.COM, for whom she created capsule collections. Lulu Kennedy selected Claire to show her spring/summer 2014 collection as part of Fashion East, and this season Claire exhibited as part of Topshop and the British Fashion Council’s NEWGEN initiative.
