Prestigious Stephen Lawrence Scholarship goes to Westminster Student
Law 10 June 2014
Aspiring lawyer Eniola Asaolu, a first year LLB student, has won the prestigious Stephen Lawrence Scholarship 2014. This is an outstanding achievement for Eniola, who has undergone a long and strenuous selection process made of preliminary interviews, character tests and intense academic tasks with 40 other applicants coming from universities across the UK.
Eniola was selected by international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer for the new scholarship programme, which aims to address the under-representation of black men from low-income households in large commercial law firms. Freshfields have selected only a handful of candidates across the country to represent at this year’s Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship programme.
Freshfields’ representative Will Lawes said: “We are delighted to have found these talented and driven individuals as our inaugural scholars. The aim of the scholarship is to open doors to the legal profession for people of potential and at the same time ensure that we enrich the talent pool of candidates for positions at our firm for the long term.”
This scholarship will gain Eniola access to many opportunities, including £3,500 towards his degree, interview coaching and career guidance, one-to-one mentoring, and an alternative route to interview for a training contract at the City law firm. He says “Obtaining the scholarship alone has made my dream of becoming a corporate lawyer somewhat more tangible, and I will be pursuing that desire with a lot more force.”
Eniola is now a major step closer to his dream job of corporate lawyer thanks to winning a Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship. “I feel hugely encouraged”, concludes Eniola, “and I feel grateful to everyone who has supported me and has had faith in me reaching my goal”.
