Joshua Oppenheimer is awarded MacArthur 'genius' grant

3 October 2014

Joshua Oppenheimer, a Reader at the Faculty of Media, Arts and Design and Oscar-nominated film director, was among this year’s recipients of MacArthur fellows "genius" grants, one of the most prestigious US awards for academics, creatives and public intellectuals.

Oppenheimer's film The Act of Killing was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature and won a BAFTA for Best Documentary. His recent documentary The Look of Silence received five awards at Venice Film Festival.

The MacArthur fellowship grant involves a no-strings-attached stipend of $625,000, paid out over five years. The award comes with no stipulations or reporting requirements, and allows recipients maximum freedom to follow their creative visions.

Oppenheimer commented: "Receiving the MacArthur fellowship pretty much towers above every other kind of recognition that I’ve had, […] it creates the conditions for me to be just as probing, exploring, wild and innovative in my next body of work."
