Westminster climbs up the Green League

13 June 2013

Since 2007, People and Planet, a UK-based student-led charity, has been ranking universities’ sustainability performance, releasing their results every year on their website and through The Guardian.

Responding to the need for a comprehensive and independent league table of universities ranked by environmental and ethical performance, it has now become a very powerful tool in ‘putting climate change on the desk of every Vice-Chancellor in the UK’.

We have continuously increased performance and rankings for the past three years. This year, we are ranked 100th, along with Durham, Goldsmiths and London Met, moving up seven places from last year. Our key strength this year has been around our Environmental Policy, where we have met all the indicators set, but our weakest area is how we source our energy, which still comes from fossil-fuelled power stations.

We will continue to improve our sustainability performance and aim for the stars. If you would like to get involved in our journey to become a more sustainable university please contact the Sustainability Team at [email protected].

More about the Green League

The Green League ranks 152 universities on 30 performance indicators spanning 13 categories, which track progress and performance on two broad areas: systemic improvement and actual environmental performance. The criteria is weighted slightly towards systemic improvement, with the rest of a university’s performance by numbers from environmental performance indicators. Categories include environmental policy and staff; Environmental Management System; ethical investment and procurement; carbon management; engagement; education; energy and water consumption; and waste and water disposal.
