University's Oral History Project launched

23 May 2013

With 175 years of history to look back on, the University of Westminster has a few stories to tell. While official documents provide a vital window into the past, oral history often gives a much richer picture of what life was really like and what people really thought.

Our Oral History Project brings to life the University's past through spoken testimony and stories from alumni of various courses. It includes interviews with Polytechnic secondary schoolboys who studied with us in the 1930s and 1940s (including those evacuated during the Second World War), as well as members of clubs and University staff.

The University’s Archive Services has recorded 50 interviews, which can be listened to by appointment. With the help of the Digital Communications team, 70 excerpts from these interviews are now available online, categorised under different topics for the public to explore.

The project is ongoing and the Archives Team is always looking for new participants. Contact Archive Services at archive@westminster.ac.uk for more information.
