Towards the 'Ubiquitous Eco-City'

10 April 2013

New paper identifies significant trends that have accompanied the internationalisation of eco-city policy and practice.

A new paper published in Urban Research & Practice (volume 6, Jan 2013, pp.54-74) uses empirical data to identify a series of significant trends that have accompanied the global mainstreaming of eco-city policy and practice.

These trends include:

  • increased international knowledge transfer activities involving both public and private actors
  • the centrality of ‘carbon discourse’
  • the marrying of ‘green’ with ‘smart’ technological systems
  • a focus on achieving environmental innovation through economic growth.

Together, they render contemporary urban sustainability conceptually and practically distinctive from earlier periods. The paper draws out a number of implications for policy, planning and practice.
