Senna scoop at the Evening Standard British Film Awards

8 February 2012

Asif Kapadia’s moving documentary on the life and death of Brazilian Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna racks up yet another accolade, winning Best Documentary at last night’s London Evening Standard British Film Awards 2012.

From first-class directors to unforgettable performances, British cinematic talent was honoured last night at the Evening Standard British Film Awards at the London Film Museum, hosted by Green Wing’s Stephen Mangan. And walking away with the award for Best Documentary was Westminster Alumnus Asif Kapadia, with his intensely emotional biopic, Senna.

Kapadia adds this to his already impressive award tally, which includes the World Cinema Audience Award Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival 2011, Best British Documentary at the British Independent Film Awards and the Audience Award for Best International Feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival 2011.Since graduating from the University of Westminster in 1994, Kapadia has directed several award-winning films, including The Sheep Thief (1997), The Warrior (2001) and Far North (2007, FILM4).

Asif continues his association with the University by giving guest lectures to up and coming filmmakers at the University of Westminster’s School of Media, Arts and Design and sits on the Advisory Board of the Regent Street Cinema restoration project.
