Saumya Kareem presents her research at the DPA

Saumya Kareem of the Applied Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and Very Large Scale Integration Research Group (VLSI), presented her research at the prestigious Digital Pathology Association's (DPA) Annual International Conference on 30th September 2012. The conference is intended to facilitate education and awareness of digital pathology applications in healthcare and life sciences, and the DPA holds the annual international conference to share best practices and promote the use of technology among colleagues in order to demonstrate efficiencies, awareness, and its ultimate benefits to patient care.
The DPA was founded in 2009. When founded the DPA's goals included supporting digital pathology education initiatives, defining best practices, influencing standards and interfaces, organizing an annual conference that addresses diverse needs within the industry, and more.Every year they invite papers that can demonstrate innovation and a commitment to excellence in healthcare; with specific support for pathology education, clinical research, informatics, and the practice of human pathology throughout the world, and select only 40 papers to be presented.
This year they have selected work of Saumya Kareem, supervised by Profs. Kale and Morling entitled “Automated Malaria Diagnosis in Fluorescent Thin Blood Image Using Annular Ring Ratio Method” to be one of the 40 presentations from around the world which they judged to have the potential to contribute distinctively to the field. Our work is pioneering in the field of Malaria diagnosis, which enhances the medical credibility of the work in the healthcare area as it has been reviewed by professionals in the Digital Pathological slide imaging Technology. From the selected 40 that presented at the conference Saumya was the only student who was selected, the rest being PhD graduates, Medically Qualified Doctors and professionals working in the field.
The presentation, that took place in the USA, was fully funded by the DPA, and created a lot of interest amongst the audience, from Academia, the practitioners and industry alike.
