Westminster alumnus scoops BIFA

5 December 2011

Asif Kapadia’s documentary on the life of iconic Brazilian Formula One racing driver Ayrton Senna scooped Best British Documentary at the British Independent Film Awards last night.

The award was the start of an evening of success for Kapadia; Senna also won the Pioneering and Innovation Award at the 2011 AUTOSPORT Awards just hours later.

Since graduating from the University of Westminster in 1994, Kapadia has directed several award-winning films, including The Sheep Thief (1997), The Warrior (2001) and Far North (2007, FILM4).

Senna, released in 2010, has received numerous nominations and distinguished accolades (the World Cinema Audience Award Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival 2011 and Audience Award for Best International Feature at the Los Angeles Film Festival 2011).

Asif continues his association with the University by giving guest lectures to up and coming filmmakers at the University of Westminster’s School of Media, Arts and Design.
