University scholarships top £4m as international awards are announced

5 August 2011

The largest scholarship scheme of any UK university has announced more than 100 international recipients for the September 2011 academic year bringing the total to more than £4m.

The 108 awards, which value nearly £2.5m, are in addition to the 102 scholarships that were received by domestic (UK/EU) students earlier in the year.

And a further £250,000 will be awarded before the end of December 2011 for part-time and January 2012 start courses.

Director of Scholarship Colin Matheson, said the decisions had been particularly difficult to make this year with more than 4,000 applications in total and 2,500 for the international scholarships alone.

He said: "The quality of the applications this year was outstanding and sadly we have had to disappoint a large number of people.

"However, we hope that what we have done is to provide opportunities for people who may not have been able to access world quality Higher Education without our help.

"We are particularly concerned to provide skills and knowledge to students from developing countries who wish to return home to assist in the development of their nation."
