First Intern at the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication

15 September 2009

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communications has
taken on its first intern to assist staff and students.
James Smith, who graduated with a First in Television in June,
started work in September.

“As our courses have grown in complexity, the need for more support
has become more obvious, said Jane Thorburn, Course Leader for
Television. “Having someone as good as James will be a great
help”.

The initiative is part of a larger exercise
expanding opportunities for students. This year the
department will be launching an online news site reflecting
news and events in its area, headed up by a professional
journalist, but staffed by students.

The scheme mirrors the work of US universities, such
as Miami and Minnesota in which academia works in conjunction with
newspapers and broadcaster, whilst retaining their
autonomy.

A pilot of this method, a website in which students sourced
the news and covered media events such as Journalism in
Crisis, attended by the BBC Director General, can be found on
WNOL.
