BBC Radio London: Mykaell Riley discusses today’s idea of Reggae Music

Music 21 December 2018

Mykaell Riley, Principal Investigator of Bass Culture research at the University of Westminster, was interviewed by BBC Radio London to talk about reggae music.

He explained: “In today’s world we’ve already confused the term ‘reggae’ with all Jamaican genres and a format that arrived in 1968, so I think that one of the first things to do when talking about Jamaican popular music is just to clarify your timeline and mention the genre you’re actually speaking about.”

Speaking about the United Nations’ definition of reagge, he said “I think the UN are referring to Jamaican popular music over the last half century, and looking at an international recognition for what Jamaica has contributed to humanity and how that is then related back to its origins which is Jamaica. And behind that, one of the jobs of UNESCO, is to look for financial support to protect that cultural output.”
