About the talk

Are you considering a career in the creative sectors and have visions of becoming a creative leader? A diverse panel of speakers with vast experience in the creative sectors will discuss working towards becoming a creative boss. The panel will address questions such as: How can we develop teams which are both creative and efficient? What’s the best way to manage people? How does creativity turn into money? How do we have new ideas? And how do we turn new ideas into successful new businesses? Other topics to be covered by the panel include: the difference between creativity and innovation; how to become a digital pioneer; the joys of social media marketing; how technology has disrupted both the advertising and media industries; and the importance of creative bosses having a clear vision for their clients and staff.

The host will lead the speakers through ‘What It Takes to be a Creative Boss’ and there will be time for the audience to ask the panel questions both during the Q&A and informally after the event with refreshments and networking. About the speakers

Joan Smith, Founder & CEO, Fruit Social Ltd (Media Studies, 1991)

Joan is a former broadcast and print journalist who 'went' digital back in 2000 when Google was the new kid on the search engine block and Facebook was a twinkle in Mark Zuckerberg's eye. Joan is the Founder and CEO of Fruit Social Ltd, a digital marketing agency based in Hackney, the home of Silicon Roundabout. Joan is also a DJ/Producer with a weekly ‘Fresh Communion’ show on Real House Radio.

William Frank, Founder, XYLO (BSc (Hons) Business Computing, 2006)

William is the Founder of XYLO, a boutique advertising agency based in London and Manchester. A self taught creative, he has worked with a diverse mix of well-known brands in the UK, including o2, Channel 4, Karen Miller & Unilever.

Dr Paul Dwyer, Director, Academic Enterprise, University of Westminster

Paul is responsible for leading academic enterprise in the Westminster School of Media, Arts and Design, which is similar to leading creative teams – trying to combine specialist skills with entrepreneurial opportunities. In particular, Paul works with the teams in the Creative Enterprise Centre, the China Media Centre, MusicTank, Westphoto, and The Chevening South Asia Journalism Programme. Paul also runs an MA course in International Media Business, and he is completing a book titled Understanding Media Production (Routledge), to be published later this year. Paul has worked for the BBC as the Head of Development for Documentary and Specialist Factual and acted as a strategic consultant for TV companies and cultural organisations.


Shiela Birungi, Manager, Creative Enterprise Centre, University of Westminster

Shiela is currently the manager of Creative Enterprise Centre, a new University of Westminster initiative with a mission to bridge the gap between Higher Education and industry and to support students to breakthrough, standout and thrive in business. Prior to this, Shiela worked as a programme manager for an Accelerator supporting young entrepreneurs in developing countries to build and validate their business models and to find investment.
