Call for papers: Transactions: Imaging/Art/Science - Image Quality, Content and Aesthetics

11 June 2018

The conference will take place from 26 April to 27 April 2019. Find out more about the conference.

Suggested topics

Topics may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Image quality. Quantification and modelling of physical and perceptual attributes in images and imaging systems, image quality models, visual measurements and image psychophysics.
  • Computational aesthetics.  Computational aesthetics is a fast-growing and multidisciplinary field of research in computer vision. Along with other new aesthetic and critical frameworks, it is opening up new lines of enquiry and debate.
  • Deep learning and big data analysis. The role of big data usage and analysis for the definition of image content and aesthetic values.
  • Image content and context analysis. The influence image content and context have on the judgement of image quality. The standards used to judge a family snapshot are not the same as those applied to artistic or scientific images.
  • Innovative artistic practice. Art practices based in computational aesthetics, big data, new imaging technologies, etc.
  • Critical and philosophical approaches to image aesthetics, including, but not necessarily limited to, evaluation of works of art, theories of aesthetic standards and rules, interpretation of works of art.
  • How do perceived standards regarding acceptable image quality shift as imaging systems become more advanced?
  • How do user personality, preferences, intent, social and environmental media affect image quality and aesthetics choices.
  • Artefacts and aesthetics. Noticeably distorted images are now routinely displayed as a form of creative expression. Are the preference characteristics of observers also changing to reflect this?
  • Historical aesthetic approaches and their relationship to contemporary issues in imaging.

Authors, creators and artists are invited to submit an abstract of approximately 500 words relevant to the conference theme for a 20-minute presentation, along with a short bio and link to artwork or website, if relevant.

Abstracts (and related queries) should be submitted via email to: [email protected] or [email protected].

Subject title: Imaging/Art/Science

Deadline for abstracts: 19 November 2018

Publication of selected papers

Contributors of selected papers and artwork will be invited to submit a full manuscript or other relevant material for publication to a peer-reviewed edited book on Transactions: Imaging / Art/ Science: Image Quality, Content & Aesthetics, intended for publication after the conference by the University of Westminster Press after the conference.
