Modern and Contemporary Literature
The department’s work in this area coalesces around three overlapping strands:
- Theories and interdisciplinary practices of modernism
- Contemporary writing
- American literature
Research by John Beck, David Cunningham, Leigh Wilson, and Anne Witchard has variously addressed modernist literature’s engagement with, for example. politics, architecture, film and visual culture, the occult, and China. Current research focuses on the aesthetic and political continuities between modernism and contemporary writing and culture, including Leigh Wilson’s work on modernist legacies in the twenty-first century novel, David Cunningham’s exploration of modernist temporalities, and Georgina Colby’s ongoing investigation of women’s writing and the avant-garde. John Beck’s research on the continuities of Cold War culture and Lucy Bond’s work on the politics of memory, address twentieth century American literature and culture in contemporary contexts.
