Course summary

Radio is prospering thanks to its ability to adapt to new forms of consumption and is being transformed for the next generation of listeners. Our degree in Radio and Digital Production prepares you for all aspects of this amazing medium, from producing audio for new platforms, to creating your own pop-up radio station.

Our students tell us they like the location of the campus - right on the doorstep of the London media industries, our professional-standard equipment (including a brand new studio) and the range of modules to choose from. We also offer a tightly-knit and supportive learning community.

The course teaches you to produce audio and digital content for a variety of broadcast platforms, using the latest technology. Practical production work is also complemented by academic scholarship in media theory.

Our lecturers are among the top names in their field, and together we will help you develop the necessary skills in entrepreneurship and employability, to prepare you for the workplace. Our recent graduates have gone to work for the BBC and the commercial radio sector (as broadcast assistants and producers, studio managers and presenters), as well as setting up in digital and social media.

Our approach is to provide you with all the practical skills you need to work in radio, audio and multimedia production. We combine this with the development of your entrepreneurial skills, so that every practical piece of work is based around pitch and commission, culminating in an individual project where you create and curate audio for an outside organisation. Another key aspect of the degree focuses on the development of your ability to analyse and communicate ideas relating to theoretical debates across the media. Your understanding of the social, political and economic context within which the media operates will help you produce a major piece of original research in your final year.

Learning takes place through a combination of face-to-face teaching – lectures, workshops, seminars, and small group and one-to-one sessions – and guided independent study on group projects, individual assignments, research tasks and preparation.

The course is based at the recently refurbished Harrow Campus – home to Westminster School of Media, Arts and Design – where you will work alongside students from film, photography, music, fashion and journalism, in a unique hothouse of creative opportunity.

Course structure

The following subjects are indicative of what you will study on this course.

We start with introductory skills in audio and digital production, teaching you how to record, edit and mix live and pre-recorded items, in sound, video and for web content. You will also learn how to operate a studio desk and become proficient in a variety of production roles. At the same time, we teach wider production skills including research, legal, ethical and compliance issues and how to pitch ideas. We also teach you how to critique the aesthetic qualities of audio and the creative use of sound from a theoretical perspective, alongside the social, political and economic significance of media institutions. Credit Level 4

You will work on a range of production projects, both individual and group-based. In particular you will learn about music scheduling, playlisting and commercial music formats by producing a series of live music programmes, which include radio commercials, outside broadcasts and social media content. You will also produce an individual project focussing on storytelling, which combines audio with other digital artefacts. You will be able to choose from a range of other radio options, such as Talk Radio, along with a menu of modules from the Faculty and University.

Credit Level 5

In your final year, you and your cohort will create a ‘pop-up’ radio station, which will broadcast on the internet for an extended period. You will make key decisions about the audience, the character and the music policy of the station. You will also be responsible for marketing, launching and running the station, which will include a range of live output as well as complementary audio-visual content and social media. You will also work on an individual project, developing your entrepreneurial skills to secure a commission to produce audio and digital content for a client, and create a portfolio of your work as part of our employability module. Professional Recognition

This course is accredited by Creative Skillset, the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the creative industries.

Entry Requirements

  • A Levels – BBC (excluding General Studies)
  • International Baccalaureate – 28 points (including a minimum of 5 in Higher English)
  • Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended National Diploma – DMM–DDM (depending on subject taken and overall academic profile)
  • Access to HE Diploma – Pass with 45 credits at Level 3 with a minimum of 36 Level 3 credits at Merit or Distinction. GCSE minimum grade 4 (Grade C in grading system prior to 2017) in Maths and English.

If English is not your first language, you must have an IELTS of 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in writing.

Selected candidates will be interviewed by staff and students.
