We are delighted to welcome Professor Costas Douzinas to inaugurate the annual John Keane lecture. He is Professor of Law and Director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities. Costas was a member of the team that established the Birkbeck Law School in 1992. He has been Head of the School and Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Birkbeck. His recent books include: Human Rights and Empire (2007); Adieu Derrida (2007); Nomos and Aesthetics (2006); Critical Jurisprudence (2005) and The End of Human Rights (2000). Costas is the managing editor of Law and Critique: The International Journal of Critical Legal Thought and of the Birkbeck Law Press. His work has been translated in 8 languages.
About the John Keane lecture: Born in southern Australia and educated at the Universities of Adelaide, Toronto and Cambridge, John Keane is now Professor of Politics at the University of Sydney and at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin (WZB). In 1989 he founded the Centre for the Study of Democracy (CSD) at the University of Westminster in London.
