Because only 20% of offenders and 5-6% of the prison population are women, they are squeezed into a system designed to deal with the majority of men. This has serious implications for a group of offenders who are more likely to have multiple and complex problems.
Despite many efforts, women are still not represented as they should be as practitioners, particularly at senior level. The legal professions and judiciary would be good areas for fresh research to see why women are not reaching senior levels.
Under-reporting and poor services for those experiencing rape and domestic violence – both women and men - are still of concern and it is feared that existing services may be cut in the present economic climate.
