This module will equip you with the essential skills and practice in a range of usability techniques, and the knowledge to conduct usability studies. The module emphasises the role of the user within the design process; the importance of experimental design and statistical analysis is illustrated with real-world examples, and the ability to interpret and critically discuss results is stressed throughout.
The module covers a number of usability testing issues, including the role of testing in usability studies; formulating a real-world enquiry in a usability context; organising, planning and conducting studies; data collection methods; statistical analysis; and reporting on real-world enquiry. By the time you complete the module you will have developed a range of skills, such as the ability to plan, organise and conduct usability testing for interactive media products (IMPs), analysing and interpreting results relating to user behaviour to ensure the quality of an IMP, and being able to inform the design and development of an IMP.
This is a practice-based module, and teaching and learning methods involve a combination of lectures, discussions and practical tutorials. The assessment focuses on group coursework – including experiments and a report (1,600 words) – and a closed exam.
